About the artist
Naomi King is a Dutch-Surinamese street artist and designer. She is a rising star in the Dutch street art scene, and we are thrilled to witness more of her vibrant creations adorning public spaces. Naomi has been recognized as one of the top 5 Rotterdam street artists to follow and has contributed to the Pow!Wow! Rotterdam yearly street art festival (Now All Caps).
Her artistic talent manifested early in life. As per her Surinamese father, Naomi King could 'draw rather than chew chicken.' Growing up as an ardent cartoon enthusiast and comic reader, particularly indulging in the long-running indie comic Elfquest by the American couple Wendy and Richard Pini, Naomi found a profound connection to the interactions among different elf tribes within the comic. This connection led her to immerse herself entirely in the comic's world, to the point of being asked by Belgian publisher Arboris to translate the comic strip into Dutch at the age of thirteen.
Years later, when handed an aerosol can during a date, she embraced the opportunity to use the wall as her canvas. Working in the public space felt like the perfect medium of expression for her. "My father always says, 'Your talent is a gift,'" explains King. "And you also give a gift to someone else. Art is for everyone. If I can make other people happy with my brain farts and creations, that's a win-win."
Naomi's influences span from art nouveau to '80s cartoons, resulting in a remarkably dynamic style bursting with splashes of color.
